Spotify Accuses Apple of Extortion

Spotify again made a strong statement against Apple, this time they called Apple’s steps to comply with new European Union rules a joke.

In a post on their official website, Spotify said that the application installation fees charged by Apple were clearly extortion. Apple is said to be forcing developers not to leave their App Store.

Apple calls this payment scheme the Core Technology Fee, which is charged for installing applications from outside the App Store. Yes, specifically for the European market, Apple is forced to allow the installation of applications from outside the App Store to comply with new rules from the European Union.

However, they charge an installation fee of 0.5 euros per application per year for each application that has exceeded the number of installations of 1 million.

According to Spotify, this new tax from Apple will burden developers, especially developers who provide their applications for free, for example Spotify, whose applications can be downloaded for free but users have to pay a subscription fee to enjoy premium services.

“From the Apple proposal that we read, developers will still have to pay this fee even if users download the application, never use it, and forget to delete it,” wrote Spotify.

Spotify users on Apple have decreased

Not only that, they also criticized the 17% commission that must be paid to Apple from developers who choose to use third-party payment services. What’s more, Spotify is planning to release its own payment system.

“Spotify is facing an unsustainable problem. With the number of installs on Apple’s platform for the EU at around 100 million, this tax system for downloads and updates could make our consumer acquisition costs skyrocket,” wrote Spotify CEO Daniel Ek in X.

“Under these new regulations, we cannot afford these costs if we want to be a profitable company, so our only option is to stick with the status quo,” he continued.

In his question, Apple spokesperson Fred Sainz admitted that Apple is ready to support the success of all developers, including Spotify. “Changes to the revenue sharing system for apps in the European Union give developers choice — with options for iOS app distribution and payment processing,” Sainz said.

“Every developer can choose to stick with the old rules. And under the new rules, more than 99% will pay more or less the same or perhaps lower fees to Apple,” he continued.

Apple Cuts Price of iPhone 15, Impact of Sluggish Sales?

Apple made a surprise after just cutting the price of the iPhone 15 series in China. This rare discount comes after analysts reported iPhone sales dropping drastically in China.

Apple has quietly introduced discounted prices for its newest iPhone models on their official website starting today, Monday (15/1/2024). This promotion is valid from January 18 to January 21 ahead of the Chinese New Year celebrations.

The price of the iPhone 15 series in China has been cut to 500 Yuan or around IDR 1 million. The discount is equivalent to 5% of the original price of the iPhone 15 series in China.

Apple usually cuts prices on its gadgets ahead of Chinese New Year, which this year falls in February. However, this discount is quite surprising considering that Apple has never discounted the price of its newest iPhone in recent years.

The price of the iPhone 15 series in China was previously cut at the end of October last year, but not by Apple directly but by retail partners such as Pinduoduo and Taobao. In fact, the discount offered is up to IDR 2 million cheaper than Apple’s official price.

This year’s discount covers many iPhone variants, from the iPhone 13 which is two years old to the iPhone 15 Pro Max which is only a few months old.

Apple is also offering discounted prices on other devices including the MacBook Air, some iPad models, some AirPod models, and the Apple Watch SE. The price of the MacBook Air in China has even been discounted by up to 700 Yuan or around Rp. 1.7 million, as quoted from Bloomberg, Monday (15/1/2024).

Discounts for the iPhone 15 series were announced when consumers in China prefer local cellphones, such as cellphones made by Huawei. Not to mention that the Chinese government is also starting to tighten the use of iPhones and other foreign cellphones in several government organizations.

Analysts from Jefferies recently revealed that iPhone sales in China in 2023 will fall by 30%. iPhone sales in China are also predicted to fall by double digits during 2024 and this will not be helped by the launch of the iPhone 16 series.

Apple Expands Find My App to 32 Devices

Apple has quietly increased the number of devices users can track with its Find My app, doubling the previous limit from 16 to 32 devices.

This change was first discovered by Nicolas Alveraz (@nicolas09F9) in an Apple support document as reported by TechViral from Gizmochina, Tuesday (16/1/2024).

These updated limits apply to a wider range of devices than before, including AirTags, Apple headphones (including some Beats models), newer MagSafe wallets, and even third-party Find My network accessories like e-bikes.

It’s worth noting that some AirPods models count as multiple items in Find My. Regular AirPods and first-generation AirPods Pro count as two items, while second-generation AirPods Pro count as three items due to their ability to track the charging case individually.

This tracking limit increase likely addresses concerns from some users who hit the previous 16-item limit quickly, especially with the introduction of AirTags and the expansion of the Find My network to third-party devices.

Adding new devices to Find My remains easy. For example, add an AirTag by holding it to your iPhone, tapping the pop-up that appears, choosing a name, then registering it with your Apple ID.

The limits of the updated My Find feature are currently visible in Apple’s support documents, but have not been officially announced by the company. Nonetheless, this is a welcome change for users who rely on the Find My network to track their stuff.

Find My’s expanded limits are a welcome change for Apple users who rely on the app to track their stuff.

This provides greater flexibility and peace of mind, knowing that more of your important items can be easily found if they are misplaced or even forgotten.

Rumors that the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will be able to upgrade to 8GB RAM

The iPhone 16 series will be launched in the second half of 2024 bringing a number of improvements. The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus, which are the standard variants, will also get a number of upgrades, including more RAM.

According to analyst Jeff Pu, the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will get a RAM upgrade to 8GB. This is a significant increase from the 6GB RAM on the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus.

If this rumor is true, then all iPhone 16 variants will have 8GB RAM. The iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max should still use 8GB RAM following the previous generation.

Apart from that, Pu claims that the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will be powered by the A18 chipset, while the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will use the A18 Pro chip. This is the first time the standard variant of the iPhone will use the A18 chip which is made with 3nm fabrication.

Specifically for the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, Pu said that these two devices will use the Qualcomm X75 modem. Meanwhile, the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will use the Qualcomm X70 modem.

Currently all variants of the iPhone 15 series use the Qualcomm X70 modem. If Pu’s report is accurate, Apple will likely differentiate the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro variants based on the modem used, and it is possible that the 5G speed between the two phones will be different, as quoted from 9to5Mac, Monday (15/1/2024).

Pu also claims the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will support Wi-Fi 6E, which is currently only available on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. Wi-Fi 6E is claimed to have faster connections, lower latency, and improved network performance.

Meanwhile, the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will likely support Wi-Fi 7. This 7th generation wireless network was only officially announced last week.

Apart from upgrades to improve network performance and quality, the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will also get a main camera upgrade from 12 MP to 48 MP. Previous rumors stated that these two variants would be equipped with an Action Button, a feature previously only available on the iPhone 15 Pro.

Wow! China claims it can break AirDrop encryption on iPhone

The Chinese government claims to have succeeded in finding a way to identify message senders via Apple’s AirDrop feature.

According to the Chinese government, they took this step as part of their efforts to silence the spread of content considered illegal, as quoted by Techviral from Time, Wednesday (10/1/2024).

It is an institute in Beijing, China, that has succeeded in developing a technique to break into encrypted device records on the iPhone. This note contains identification in the form of email and number from the sender of the AirDrop content.

Chinese police have succeeded in identifying a number of suspects using this method, without saying whether these suspects have been arrested or not.

“This increases the efficiency and accuracy of solving cases and avoids the spread of inappropriate content as well as the potential negative effects it causes,” wrote the Chinese government.

For your information, AirDrop is an iPhone feature that activists in various countries usually use to spread their messages. This feature requires a Bluetooth connection, so it requires the user to be in a relatively close position.

One example of its application was during the massive demonstrations in Hong Kong in 2019. Via AirDrop, users can send data in the form of images, documents or videos between Apple devices.

China Controls Apple

AirDrop itself has actually been restricted in China since 2022, precisely after the service was used by demonstrators to distribute images to fellow iPhone users. So far, Apple has not issued a statement regarding the Chinese government breaking AirDrop encryption.

In fact, in 2021, there was a report by security researchers from the Secure Mobile Networking Lab (SEEMOO) and the Cryptography and Privacy Engineering Group (ENCYPTO) at Darmstadt Technical University, Germany, which stated that there was a weakness in the AirDrop feature, namely that it could expose the user’s number and email.

Researchers claim to have reported Apple about the flaw in May 2019. However, Apple is said to have never responded.

“It is possible for hackers to learn the phone numbers and email addresses of AirDrop users. All they need is a Wi-Fi-enabled device and physical proximity to the target who starts the discovery process by opening the sharing panel on the iOS or macOS device,” quoted a Darmstadt Technical University press release.

iPhone sales in China have dropped drastically, eroded by Huawei and Xiaomi

Apple’s business in China is not doing well, as seen from iPhone sales which fell by more than 30% year over year in the first week of January 2024.

This data was released by Jefferies analysts who also said that Apple’s competitors such as Huawei and Xiaomi remained strong with sales that did not decline, as quoted by Tech Viral from Cnbc, Tuesday (9/4/2024).

Jefferies analysts also predict that iPhone sales in China will fall by double digits during 2024. In fact, they also predict that Apple will experience higher revenue pressure this year.

This Jefferies analyst report reinforces other reports which also say that Apple’s business will not be fine in early 2024. As previously reported, Apple shares slipped 4% due to sluggish sales of the iPhone 15, especially in China.

Barclays analyst Tim Long said that not only iPhone sales were sluggish, but also other Apple products. According to him, when the iPhone 16 is released it will not help boost Apple’s sales, because according to him the iPhone 16 will lack a big breakthrough.

The sluggishness of Apple’s business is inversely proportional to Huawei’s cellphone business, whose market share increased by 6% year over year. Meanwhile, Apple’s market share actually fell 4% year over year.

“As we discussed last week, the iPhone market share declining YoY in China is a negative surprise, we believe this cannibalization comes not only from HW (Huawei-ed) but from Xiaomi and others,” said Jefferies analysts in a note to investors. .

This analysis is strengthened by Apple’s insistence on providing discounts for iPhones in China. According to Jefferies analysts, this step was taken by Apple to maintain its market share in China. The products with bigger discounts are a number of iPhone 14 models, while other products that are already discounted also receive bigger price cuts.

WhatsApp is testing the theme feature to change the appearance of the application

The WhatsApp application has been known for its appearance which is dominated by white (or black in dark mode) and green. But in the near future users will be able to change the appearance of the WhatsApp application on their cellphones.

WABetaInfo announced that WhatsApp is testing a Theme feature which allows users to change the color of the application. This feature was found in WhatsApp beta for iOS version 24.1.10.70.

The screenshot uploaded by WABetaInfo shows that there are five colors that users can choose, namely green, blue, white, purple and pink. There is no option to choose a custom color according to the user’s wishes.

At the bottom of the color selection there is a statement that states ‘This only updates the main color of the app’, which means that this color selection only changes the main color of the application.

But don’t worry because WABetaInfo also found that this customization option will likely be expanded to allow users to change the color of the chat bubble, as quoted by Tech viral.

The option to change the theme color of the WhatsApp application can be accessed in the Appearance menu in the application settings. However, currently these options and menus cannot be accessed by users because this feature is still in the development stage.

This customization option will certainly give users the freedom to change the appearance of the application according to their wishes. Moreover, currently the customization options on WhatsApp are still limited to changing the wallpaper in chat.

WhatsApp users have also been waiting for a long time for the theme feature to appear in Meta’s application. Many users even turn to mod applications made by third parties so they can change the theme of the WA application.

Even though it was only discovered in the WhatsApp beta for iOS, this feature will most likely also be present on Android. It is not yet known when WhatsApp will release the theme feature for all its users.
